Background
The Safe and Fuel Efficient Driving (SAFED) scheme in Scotland aims to improve the competitiveness of the Scottish road haulage industry and also to contribute to the Scottish Executive’s
climate change targets. The Scottish Road Haulage Fund (SRHMF) provided initial funding for the first 1400 drivers to be trained, resulting in significant benefits for their companies.
Driver training involves a full day 'off-the-job' training course, which includes practical and theoretical assessments on fuel efficient and safe HGV driving.
Qualified
SAFED instructors assess driver performance both before and after training. Drivers are improving the MPG of vehicles by 10.2% and are reducing gear changes by over 33%, on average. This can be translated into an average saving of £2,184 per driver,
per year.
