Instructors Eligibility

Becoming a SAFED Qualified Instructor will develop your skills to become the best instructors in the industry

SAFED benefits to Instructors:

  • 2-day training course provided
  • material supplied to help deliver training
  • tried and tested methods using a simplified process
  • instructors who successfully complete training will receive an instructors certificate

To become a SAFED Instructor you must:

  • have no more than 3 points on your licence
  • have no driving bans within the last 4 years
  • undertake a SAFED assessment and achieve a 'pass with distinction'
  • be on the Driving Standards Agency (DSA) voluntary register for HGV driving instructors, or in the process of committing to registration. Click here to find out more
  • undertake the training in a vehicle fitted with fuel monitoring equipment, click here to find out more. The vehicle will be required for the first day of the two day training course only

There are two instructor categories, Commercial Training Instructors and In-house Instructors.

To qualify as a Commercial Training Instructor you should have:

  • full class C & E entitlement, i.e. be able to train on all vehicles
  • a HGV licence for a minimum of 5 years
  • at least 2 years instructor experience

To qualify as an In-house Instructor you should have:

  • a class of licence appropriate to the vehicles used by the company
  • a HGV licence for a minimum of 3 years
